Windstorm, Fortified, and Resilient Custom Home Construction
In Texas, a custom home has to hold up to more than the eye can see. Wind, rain, humidity, and storm exposure test a home long after move-in day. That is why we build every Hawkeye home to windstorm-resilient standards as standard practice, not as an add-on you have to ask for. The parts that protect your home – framing, sheathing, roof systems, flashing, structural connections, and moisture control – are built to a higher baseline on every project, whether your local code requires it or not.
Building With the Texas Environment in Mind
Fort Bend County homeowners, including those in Needville and Rosharon, build in a climate that tests a home: wind, rain, humidity, soil movement, drainage, and storm exposure. A home either accounts for that from the start or it does not.
We build for it from the start. The materials, installation details, and planning that protect a home against Texas weather are part of every Hawkeye build, not choices you have to research or ask for. We handle those decisions as standard and explain them in plain language, so nothing that protects your home is left as an afterthought.
Windstorm-Resilient Building, Built In as Standard
Every home we build meets our own windstorm-resilient standard, built to Inland 1 Windstorm Standards even where the local code does not require it. That is the Hawkeye Gold Standard, and it is built into how we frame and seal every home:
- ZIP System sheathing across the entire structure, walls and roof, installed to the manufacturer’s nail pattern and sealed with high-performance tape. Traditional OSB with a Tyvek house wrap can tear and flap in high wind and let moisture in. The ZIP System locks the building envelope into one sealed, durable barrier built to last for decades.
- Full clip-and-strap hurricane ties connecting the roof structure down to the walls.
- Additional hold-downs through the structure for a continuous load path from roof to foundation.
- Reinforced shear walls built well beyond code to resist lateral wind loads.
You do not have to upgrade to get this, and you do not have to know to ask for it. It is simply how we build.
Fortified: The Upgrade Above Our Standard
Because windstorm-resilient building is already our baseline, Fortified is the upgrade, not the starting point. Fortified is a nationally recognized program with specific building practices, inspections, and documentation that verify a home’s resistance to severe weather. Some homeowners choose it for the added third-party verification, which can matter for insurance. Whether it is worth it depends on your project, location, budget, and goals, and we will walk you through that honestly during planning.
Built Above Minimum Expectations
Code is the minimum a home is allowed to be, not the standard it should be held to. A custom home or barndominium is too important to build to the bare minimum. The Hawkeye Gold Standard means practical durability, better planning, and construction details that protect the long-term value of the home, built in from the start rather than sold as extras.
“Hawkeye’s Standards are most companies’ upgrades. We build the home to last with your family’s legacy, not until the home’s warranty is done.”

FAQs
Why do windstorm standards matter in Fort Bend County?
Wind, rain, humidity, and storm exposure can affect how a home performs over time. Planning for those factors early can support durability and peace of mind.
What is Fortified construction?
Fortified is a nationally recognized program of building practices, inspections, and documentation that verify a home’s resistance to severe weather. At Hawkeye it is an optional upgrade, not the starting point, because every home we build already meets our own windstorm-resilient standard. Homeowners usually add Fortified when they want third-party verification, which can matter for insurance.
What is Zip System?
Zip System is a building material system used for sheathing and weather protection. When installed correctly, it can help improve moisture control and building envelope performance.
Can stronger construction lower insurance costs?
It may in some cases, but insurance savings should always be confirmed with the homeowner’s insurance provider before making decisions.
Should every custom home use Fortified standards?
Every Hawkeye home is already built to a windstorm-resilient standard, so you are not starting from code-minimum. Fortified is an optional upgrade on top of that, mainly for homeowners who want third-party documentation and inspection. Whether to add it depends on your property, budget, location, and insurance goals.
Do I have to pay extra for windstorm-resilient construction?
No. Building to our windstorm-resilient standard is how we build every home. Fortified is the only piece that is an add-on, because it involves a separate certification and inspection process.
