A Rustic Outdoor Kitchen and Pavilion Built for Game Days in Sienna
Melba and John wanted a backyard their family and friends would actually want to spend time in. What they had was a dark, dreary patio and a fireplace that never worked. We ran the project from start to finish: a new outdoor kitchen pavilion tied into the existing roof, a renovated original patio, and a resurfaced pool deck that finally reads as one space.

A Patio Nobody Wanted to Use
The original patio was dark and didn’t function the way the family needed. The fireplace never worked, and it just wasn’t a space anyone wanted to spend time in. Melba and John wanted a place to cook, entertain, and gather with family and friends.
They already knew how we work. Hawkeye had remodeled their kitchen and bathroom first, and they brought us back to take on the backyard.
What Took Extra Planning
Working through Sienna's HOA
Sienna's HOA review is thorough, and several rounds of revisions are normal there. We worked the plans through each round until the project was approved.
Making room for a serious outdoor kitchen
Melba and John had a lot of appliances they wanted built in. Once everything was laid out, we extended the pavilion an extra five feet so the kitchen could fit the way it should.
A roofline that looks like it was always there
The new pavilion ties into the home's existing roof. Getting that connection to look original took careful framing, so the addition reads as part of the house instead of something bolted on.
One pool deck instead of three
The existing pool decking was in rough shape and had three different textures. We resurfaced all of it, so the deck, the patio and the new pavilion now feel like one finished space.
The Details
- A Santa Maria grill as the centerpiece of the outdoor kitchen
- Direct task lighting over the cooking areas
- Hidden LED strip lighting in the eaves that can be set to any color
- Built-in speakers
- Pop-up, outdoor-rated outlets
- Two TV areas: one in the new pavilion and one in the renovated original patio off the house
A Backyard That Finally Gets Used
Melba and John now have a place to cook, entertain and enjoy family and friends, and they use every bit of it. John is a huge Alabama fan, so having two TV areas, one in the pavilion and one on the patio off the house, makes game days a backyard event.
“Hawkeye construction remodeled our kitchen and bathroom, followed by an outdoor kitchen/pavilion construction that exceeded our expectations in every way. Mike and Kim are excellent communicators and provided a vision that we absolutely needed to transform our kitchen and outdoor spaces into something extraordinary that we admire daily. The final result is a perfect combination of functionality and style.”
